Peter M. Knapp
Patriot Ledger, October 2005

Metropolitan Opera soprano Carole Farley shows her versatility in a wide-ranging Naxos American Classics recital of songs by William Bolcom, with the American composer at the piano. Bolcom’s witty songs range from the outrageous recitation of an officer’s wife’s sexual adventures in ‘‘You Cannot Have Me Now or The Military Orgy’’ from a 1969 opera written for the Yale Repertory Theater to the funeral poem by Emily Dickinson, ‘‘The Bustle in the House.’’

Farley adopts a variety of voices for the 34 songs encompassing 40 years of Bolcom’s writing for concerts and theater. They include a cycle written for Marilyn Horne of poems by American women (there’s a Boston poem by Anne Sexton) as well as such ditties as ‘‘My Father the Gangster,’’ ‘‘Costa del Nowhere’’ and ‘‘Messing About in Boats.’’

John Quinn
MusicWeb International, August 2005

"This is a most interesting and wide-ranging anthology of songs by William Bolcom. Since he is a prolific songwriter I suspect that one CD can’t do more than give a flavour of his output. However, this will provide a good introduction. All the texts are provided, in English only, but there’s a German translation of the composer’s notes.

Naxos are to be congratulated on yet another enterprising issue. A few years ago such a CD would probably not have been issued, even at full price, but now here we have an excellent opportunity to sample Bolcom’s songs in first rate performances and at a most affordable price. Anyone with an interest in the song repertoire who is possessed of an enquiring ear should certainly investigate this disc."
