…a fine…survey of American music…a respite from the tonal and dramatic explorations of so many 20th-century American composers. Read complete review

Blair Sanderson, September 2011

Violinist Tim Fain and pianist Pei-Yao Wang present an appealing recital of short American compositions on this 2011 Naxos release and give a fairly representative selection of contemporary chamber works by prominent and rising composers. Naxos provides its customary fine sound, and the performances are attractively enhanced by responsive acoustics.

dmx, August 2011

River of Light features music by American composers including Phillip Glass, William Bolcom, Kevin Put, and Lev Zhurbin. The pieces are played by violinist Tim Fain and pianist Pei-Yao Wang. While the album features all 20th-century pieces, it remains very accessible and easy to listen to…

David Denton
David's Review Corner, September 2009

Tim Fain is one of the most exciting of the emerging generation of American violinists becoming known on both sides of the Atlantic. He has chosen nine works that take us through his prodigious technical credentials first showcased in Philip Glass’s Knee Play 2, an interlude in his opera, Eistein on the Beach. His programme comes entirely from the second half of the 20th century, many of the tracks, including Zhurbin’s delightful Sicilienne, here receiving their first recording…Danielpour’s River of Light, which gives the disc its title, finding my attention waning before we come to the end of this musical journey towards death. Anything Jennifer Higdon composes is worth our attention, Legacy from 1999 typical of her modern tonality, and I much enjoyed the three unaccompanied movements of The Light Guitar from Patrick Zimmerli and composed for Fain. Winning her first major competition at the age of eight, Pei-Yao Wang is a much experienced soloist and accompanist…it is generally a most enjoyable sound.
