Some excellent songs here, in radiant performances. The Months, a four-song cycle is particularly evocative. © 2014 BBC Music Magazine

Martinu’s works for voice and piano number ninety-two, and would appear to form a significant part of his total output, though in reality they are a series of cameos. Coming to an end relatively early in life, with nothing more in that genre emerging in his productive last thirty year period, the present disc covers the years 1910–1912. Basically they are a simple melody that he did not develop, many lasting less than two minutes, though he combined several to make two short song cycles, The Months and Three Songs for the ‘Red Seven’ Cabaret. They are not an option, but essential for your enjoyment. Many speak of love, sometimes with a bitter twist, the piano colouring the import of the words. The young mezzo, Jana Wallingerova, is a most persuasive advocate…The performances could not have wished for a finer pianist than Giorgio Koukl. Already having shown that he is one of today’s leading performers of Martinu’s music, he here has the benefit of nicely balanced sound. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
