This survey is centered around excerpts from previous recordings of the Leipzig Cantor’s supreme large-scale choral creations: the Mass in B minor and the St Matthew Passion. We also get four arias from well-known cantatas. My hopes were rather high as I listened to the first cut: the opening aria from the exuberant cantata, Jauchzet Gott in Allen Landen for solo soprano. The soloist delivered a flowing and dead-accurate account of this very tricky number, supported by some first-rate orchestral playing...[in other tracks] the choir was doing a truly excellent job...a decent introduction to the master’s great choral masterpieces...
