Most of the major film music composers from Jerry Goldsmith to John Williams bowed the knee before the great (and notoriously prickly) Bernard Herrmann, who is generally regarded as the most influential of modern film composers. His most famous association, of course, was with the director Alfred Hitchcock, but his work with Orson Welles is equally celebrated—from, in fact, his first film score (for Welles’ debut film Citizen Kane) to this adaptation of the Charlotte Bronte classic (which Welles starred in but did not direct). With the modern remake of the film Jane Eyre recently released on worldwide circulation, Bernard Herrmann’s score for the 1943 Hollywood movie is very timely. Herrmann had become well established as a conductor, composer and music advisor to CBS radio, but was not the first choice to write the score for Jane Eyre. Based on Charlott Brontë’s novel, it is a love story with some unhappy and dramatic turn of events, before there a bitter-sweet ending. The resulting score ran for around seventy minutes, and, far from the norm at that time, it was orchestrated by Herrmann. In many respects it has to be said that he watered down his own style of ‘classical’ music composition so as to provide Twentieth Century Fox with music that would be readily attractive to film audiences. In the accompanying booklet the conductor, Adriano, relates the trials and tribulations in arriving at a reconstructed performing score using as his basis an original in poor condition. That he linked with listening to the film soundtrack, and some of his own initiative to produce this world premiere release that he believes comes close to Herrmann’s original score before edits and other changes were made to suit the film’s action. It was recorded by a highly responsive Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1994, and released on the Marco Polo label. It was a high dynamic range sound release, and at the time was well received by the critics. It is most welcome at super-budget price.
