The Mexican-born guitarist, Pablo Garibay, is a collector of international competition awards having now won sixteen major events around the world. His most recent, the Tarrega held in 2010, leading to this debut recording for Naxos. He has already created a major concert hall career on both sides of the Atlantic and is now the Professor of Guitar in Mexico City. His choice of programme is so predictable, and I recall at least three previous Naxos recordings of Antonio Jose’s Sonata in this Laureate series, and more than a few of the pieces included in his Tarrega cameos. He is a very neat and nimble player who has some new and interesting ideas in his interpretations, particularly in a rhythmically free view of Scarlatti. I am sure the guitar world will hear much more from this young man, but I wish he had selected a unique programme to differentiate him from the plethora of competition winners, all technically so superbly equipped. The recording relays the mechanics of his left had as it moves around, but otherwise it is of the usual high quality we expect in this series.
