Peter Quantrill
Gramophone, July 2020

…The Bretón Quartet perform the music of their namesake with intense sympathy in a close but warm ambience, prizing momentum over strict accuracy. © 2020 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Stuart Sillitoe
MusicWeb International, May 2020

The performance by the Bretón String Quartet is first rate; they are certainly more committed the music of the composer they are named after than the New Budapest Quartet, making this an engaging performance. Excellent recorded sound and a good accompanying essay make this disc a real bargain. © 2020 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Records International, April 2020

Breton’s distinguished career as an opera composer and leading figure in Madrid’s musical life at the turn of the 20th century has tended to overshadow the significant contribution he made to Spanish chamber music. He remained true to the historic roots of the string quartet genre—his First (1904) being a tribute to the Viennese tradition in its Classical poise. The 1909 Third exudes Mendelssohnian inspiration in its first movement with overtly Spanish idiom, the Allegro no mucho (no, really!) third movement also having been turned into a version for piano trio as the Scherzo andalou. © 2020 Records International
