American Record Guide, September 2014

I have encountered Shinichi Fukuda at least once before…I was impressed then, and I still am. He plays with taste, an abundance of technique, and the probing intellect this music needs. © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

It might seem tacky to compare Toru Takemitsu’s superb guitar music to another Japanese art, but are you familiar with Japanese woodblock printing? Hokusai’s tidal wave is the most famous example, but many of the finest share an interesting aesthetic: a simplicity, with considerable amounts of empty space, drawing your attention to the main figures. In the words of Bill Watterson, “very few things, but precisely placed”.

Takemitsu’s guitar music is like this. Few composers so skilfully weave silence into the fabric of sound; in this way he could be compared to Mompou or Chopin. This is the kind of simplicity which a simple composer could not possibly achieve.

Guitarist Shin-ichi Fukuda’s playing is as impeccable and impressive as his credentials are, which is saying something. The Naxos engineering is outstanding, upholding their guitar series’ usual high standards. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

This recording by Shin-ichi Fukuda, who was a friend of Takemitsu, features wonderful performances of this great composer’s works. Subtly performed, and excellently recorded, this disc allows the listener to enter the sound world of Takemitsu by the side door.

If you’re familiar with Takemitsu’s other works, you should certainly discover his guitar music. And, if not, perhaps this disc of guitar pieces will help you get a first taste of one of the 20th century’s most original composers, and arguably the most important Japanese composer of the century. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

David's Review Corner, April 2014

Toru Takemitsu brought international attention to classical music being composed in 20th century Japan, yet his background was largely as a self-taught musician. Often slow and concentrating on tonal beauty, those two factors found a home in the guitar world where a wide range of timbres were at his disposal. Not a prolific composer, he was to leave a very small number of works in this genre, all of his original compositions contained on this excellently played disc. The performer is Shin-ichi Fukuda, who, as a young man, worked so closely with Takemitsu that we can take his performances as setting the benchmark. From Naxos’s Canadian recording team, the sound is impeccable. © 2014 David’s Review Center
