Ronald E. Grames
Fanfare, January 2015

…these readings have their own charm, and are occasionally…meltingly lyrical. This is an important and most welcome addition to the Vaughan Williams discography. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

Though the C Minor Piano Quintet of 1903/05 is a true masterwork the D Major Quintet of 1898 is less appealing. The London Soloists Ensemble gives the C minor Quintet a passionate character and they also make the Romance for viola and piano as well as the romantic Six Studies in English Folk Song highly attractive. © 2014 Pizzicato

The London Soloists…with Chris West, double bass, and Tim Jackson, French horn, give very affectionate and deeply felt performances of chamber music by Ralph Vaughan Williams… © 2014 Audio Video Club of Atlanta Read complete review

Any doubts about the value of the music…are soon dispelled by the fine performances. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

The performances are exceptional. In a collective and individual display of how to deliver chamber music at world-class level, Sarah-Jane Bradley’s viola playing—ear-mesmerising, yet never obtrusive—shines even in this company. And the recorded sound—in Champs Hill Music Room—is warm, natural and flawlessly clear. © 2014 BBC Music Magazine

The performers on this recording are the members of the London Soloists Ensemble.

Most important…is the technically sound approach that the performers on this album have taken in bringing music that is seldom performed…into a favorable light. © 2014 Examiner.com Read complete review

With a generous playing time and as a single disc survey of early Vaughan Williams chamber music coupled with a superb Six Studies, this disc is hard to beat. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Come down some of the byways in the quite extensive chamber music repertoire of Vaughan Williams with two early Quintets performed by a new British ensemble. Better known for his orchestral works, Vaughan Williams did write in this genre through his whole career, the earliest example here coming from the twenty-six year old composer in the Quintet of 1898 written for the rather unusual combination of violin, cello, clarinet, horn and piano. Happy and lightweight in texture, the piano is cast in the central role around which the other instruments play a role, only coming together from time to time. Five years later he wrote a Piano Quintet with the line-up of piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass…Beautifully crafted, it has an added warmth by concentrating on the lower strings. We then jump forward to 1926 and the Six Studies in English Folk Song, settings of folk songs he had gathered, and which were, in the wider world, totally unknown. Finally the Viola Romance, its date of composition unknown but probably from the same period. Led by the distinguished violinist, Lorraine McAslan, and including the pianist John Lenehan, the London Soloists is a very high quality outfit, these superb performances leaving you wanting more. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
