Barry Kilpatrick
American Record Guide, January 2016

Here we have the Barcelona Symphonic Band, led by its conductor Salvador Brotons, in a program of his own music. The band sounds enthusiastic. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Fanfare, July 2015

Brotons gets disciplined, colorful performances from his players, the Banda Municipal de Barcelona, and the sound is pretty spectacular too. It should be heard not only by lovers of the genre but also by anyone who responds to late 20th century/early 21st century tonal music. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

David Denton
David's Review Corner, February 2015

A prolific composer with a parallel career as a conductor, Salvador Brotons’ music is in a modern world of tonality that largely avoids the Second Viennese School. Born in Portugal in 1959 into a musical family, his mature education took place at the Barcelona Conservatory with Xavier Montsalvatge as his composition mentor. The Sixth Symphony, scored for wind band, was completed in 2011, its five short movements of an abstract nature, and though melodic in nature, they present challenges to the band, not least in intonation. Opening with big and bold gestures, it is the scherzo that presents the virtuoso challenge to the performers. By contrast Rebroll (Rebirth) is a graphic three movement score from 1982, and in many ways it seems to sit more readily with the players. There are obvious influences of Shostakovich, at times close to quotations, but it is a work that makes a ready introduction to his genre, its extremely quiet central movement unusual in the band repertoire. Obstinacy which started life in 1991, is largely a chamber band work, and introduces some unusual sonorities. Finally Glossa de l’Emigrant is a short and gentle Variation on a Catalan folk song. The long established Barcelona band, with the composer conducting, play with obvious enthusiasm, the woodwind particularly good in Rebroll, but bands are notoriously difficult to record, and I have heard better sound than this. © 2015 David’s Review Corner
