David Denton
David's Review Corner, May 2015

The Band of the United States Air Force breath life into a musical picture of the North York Moors National Park, probably the most beautiful part of the world. It is the scene for Dawn Flight by the British composer, Philip Wilby, who sees two planes at the end of the First World War being prepared for take-off on a crisp morning from this remote part of England. It is the disc’s most extended track of original band music, Wilby, a multifaceted composer, finding the most intriguing and fascinating wind band sonorities, the work opening in the world of Wagner, and eventually flying into the stratospheres with his intriguing scoring. The other original works are all interesting, Robert Thurston opening in the style of a Hollywood film with the sounds of outer space in Time Travels, his High Flight a very beautiful setting for chorus and band of the poem by a young Canadian pilot killed while training in England at the beginning of the Second World War. © 2015 David’s Review Corner
