Kenneth Keaton
American Record Guide, July 2019

I’ve never heard this masterpiece played with such life, joy, invention—and such a fine grasp of its difficult architecture. She [Kavenagh] makes the piece a remarkable journey, exhausting and exhilarating— even the final fugue, usually so stolid in other hands, bursts with excitement. This performance alone is worth getting this.

…The Kavenagh is a real treasure, one of the finest guitar recitals I’ve heard in ages. It belongs in any serious guitar lover’s collection. © 2019 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

David's Review Corner, January 2019

It hardly seems thirty years ago that the young Canadian guitarist, Dale Kavanagh, started out on her journey to win the most highly coveted European competitions. The present disc, with the title 20th Century Guitar, followed in three recording sessions during the 1990’s, though this disc appears to be the first release of its contents. The performances are typical of her clean and accurate fingers, whether it be in Manuel Ponce’s twenty variations and fugue on a three-bar theme called ‘La Folia’ with its Spanish connections. It was written as a showpiece for the legendary guitarist, Andres Segovia, and puts to the test the agility of both hands, linked with the need to relax into the quiet and restrained passages that punctuate the score. Benjamin Britten’s Nocturnal was the composer’s display of respect for the Sixteenth century composer, John Dowland, his use of a fragment of music by Dowland as the basis of the work’s nine sections. Premiered by the celebrated guitarist, Julian Bream, Britten used, with discretion, most of the sound colours of which the instrument is capable. Carlo Domeniconi’s Variations on an Anatolian Theme, and Larry Cooperman’s pleasing Walking on Water, complete a short disc that is obviously for guitar enthusiasts. The sound engineer has played his part in the clarity he gave Kavanagh, while at the same time keeping a nice aura around the instrument. © 2019 David’s Review Corner
