Kenneth Keaton
American Record Guide, March 2017

…Refik Kaya surely loves this music. The performances are just perfect—he doesn’t try to make the music more than it is, but he does realize the real heart in these pieces. If you don’t know Morel’s music, this is a wonderful chance to hear a healthy helping of pure delight. © 2017 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

This is a most enjoyable programme with some new treasures to delight. The playing is splendid in every sense by one of the outstanding young virtuosos of the guitar. © 2017 MusicWeb International Read complete review

David Denton
David's Review Corner, November 2016

Jorge Morel began life in Argentina in 1931 with the name Jorge Scibona, changing it twenty-six years later to be more commercial when his international career began. Over more than the four decades that followed, he toured the world extensively as one of the outstanding virtuosos of the instrument, while at the same time adding to his list of compositions. They included a concerto for guitar and orchestra, but, with few exceptions, they were solos for the instrument, the fifteen tracks included on this superbly played disc passing through the gambit of the many stylistic influences from jazz to the classics. There are pieces that remind me of pleasant balmy evenings spent in Spanish restaurants, the local guitarist providing a convivial backdrop, though at times Morel became more serious of nature, as in the classically shaped three-movement Sonatina. Reflecting his background, we have the smoochy salsa, Homage to Latin Music, and the seductively emotive Romance Criollo which offers an alternative to the up-beat Giga Criolla. Finally, [we have] an arrangement of the Misionera, one of South America’s most popular melodies from Fernando Bustamante. The Turkish guitarist, Celil Refik Kaya, comes with the composer’s testimony as to the pleasure these performances had given him. He is certainly an exceedingly agile performer who dispatches the fast music with considerable dexterity. Then, as we have come to expect, he has the Canadian sound team to provide him with an outstanding recording. © 2016 David’s Review Corner
