Lark Reviews, July 2020

Cello Suites 1, 2 & 3 arranged for guitar and here played with obvious enthusiasm and delight. While not having the nuance of the original it certainly conveys the joy of the works themselves and is able to communicate the varying moods of the original. © 2020 Lark Reviews

David's Review Corner, July 2020

Had Johann Sebastian Bach arranged his six unaccompanied Cello Suites for the Baroque lute, would they have resembled Jeffrey McFadden’s Guitar scores?

Embroidering on a single melodic line is always difficult to judge. There is no easy answer as to the degree of judicious complexity you add to the finished product. Here I think McFadden has struck a happy balance, though others might disagree. He certainly avoids the result coming too close to a version for harpsichord, though the guitar can never equate to the range of tonal colours available from a solo cello, nor, for that matter the dynamic range of the instrument. Though we do hear fingers moving around the fret, let me conclude this short review by admiring the clean-cut playing of this world famous Canadian guitarist, and to comment once again on Naxos’s impeccable Canadian recording team. We can now look forward to the second disc. © 2020 David’s Review Corner
