Kenneth Keaton
American Record Guide, November 2018

Kaya plays with a modern sensibility. He is deeply expressive, but without distortion and indulgence. This has always been a mark of his playing, and here he serves Barrios’s music with perfection. And his technique is even more accomplished than Barrios’s own. This is a treasure. © 2018 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

David Denton
David's Review Corner, June 2018

In May 2007 I wrote, ‘Never give up on Naxos’s projected cycles’, and I hope you haven’t, as this is the follow-up release in Agustin Barrios’s complete guitar works. As a public relations statement Barrios was advertised as ‘The Paganini of the guitar from the jungles of Paraguay’, though in reality he was a highly trained musician, and apart from a few months spent in Europe, his career as a performing guitarist was spent in South America where he toured extensively. He was quite prolific as a composer, though that was mainly in the field of short pieces in a popular idiom of the time, this present disc containing twenty-six tracks, many just containing a pleasing melody that is jolly and with tricky Latin American rhythms. They are performed by the Turkish-born guitarist, Celil Refik Kaya, whose playing I much admired in a Naxos disc of music by Jorge Morel (8.573514), his performances perfectly capturing the smoochy atmosphere of popular South American music. You have to go no further than the first track, Las Abejas, for a sample a quite remarkable agility in both hands, the disc rounded off with a fabulous account of Milonga. There remains one further volume in this superbly recorded series from Naxos’s Canadian team. © 2018 David’s Review Corner
