Grego Applegate Edwards
Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review, September 2019

Magdalena Llamas gives a very projective reading of these songs. She is rather in her own way as individual as the composer, and we do find the music filtered by her artistry to a significant extent. Nevertheless you hear everything with the emphasis that the composer no doubt intended. The vocal arts are necessarily intensely personal.

Recommended for anyone interested in the Modern period of Spanish musical art and too for those who would like a bit of musical adventure! © 2019 Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review Read complete review

The outcome in these songs was a similarity in tonal colours that runs through the entire period of composition, Albeniz’s untimely death coming in his forty-ninth year. They were equally miniatures, only five of the thirty-one tracks extending past the three minute length, and you will certainly have to download the words and translation to arrive at the atmosphere of the songs, the programme notes with the disc offering little in setting the scene. Her musical education had taken her to the United States which is her present domain. Partnered by the Spanish pianist, Guillermo Gonzalez, who has already contributed three discs to the Naxos catalogue in a much acclaimed project to record Albeniz’s vast catalogue of solo piano music. He is a most sensitive partner, shaping phrases with much care and attention, while the sound engineer has created an admirable balance between the voice and piano… © 2019 David’s Review Corner
