David Denton
David's Review Corner, September 2014

In the 19th century the mix of formality and joy had made the Quadrille one of the most popular dances in European ballrooms, and particularly those in Vienna. For Johann Strauss it provided a constant demand for new works and formed the breeding ground for a series of scores using in pastiche music from the popular operas of the day. They now also show just how fickle is the world of opera audiences, such works that attracted Strauss at the time now totally forgotten. There are 14 tracks, all immensely enjoyable and come from that legendary complete Strauss recording that appeared over many years on the Marco Polo label. They were benchmark performances in their day, and now gathered together they make a most desirable release. As they come from different sources, venues and recording dates, I am happy to report that we move around with little difference in sound quality. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
