Norbert Tischer
Pizzicato, May 2020

The program is varied and diverse and shows Turner as an imaginative and cosmopolitan composer having absorbed influences from many countries and styles which he condenses into his own musical language. All the pieces are easily accessible, incredibly imaginative and composed with first-class craftsmanship.

The performances are of the highest musical standard and the recording is perfectly balanced. The CD is thus a promising start to a series that will probably bring further valuable discoveries. © 2020 Pizzicato Read complete review

Given Turner’s own considerable skill on the horn, it comes as no surprise that he is able to write in a way for the instrument that is clearly demanding but also exploits the full technical potential and expressive range of the instrument. This is especially clear in the Couperin Variations. …The pianist Lauretta Bloomer, who is clearly a close and sensitive musical partner. On a purely technical front, achieving an effective recorded balance between a horn and keyboard is tricky but it has been very well done here, with the detail of the piano writing registering but at the same time the horn has the presence and power you want without overwhelming the keyboard contribution.

This is a disc of particular interest to horn specialists but one where the musical qualities on display deserve to widen its appeal. © 2020 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Ralph Graves
WTJU, April 2020

Turner writes in tonal style, often using modal harmonies and scales. His music usually features a strong rhythmic pulse, often with syncopation. For me, though, the real interest is in what Turner does with the horn.

As a performer, he’s intimately familiar with the possibilities of the instrument. And while there’s plenty of technical challenges, they’re always in service of the music. The end result is music that is immediately appealing, and often thrilling.

For horn players, this release will be a must-have. But I recommend it to anyone who’s interested in quality chamber music. You will not be disappointed. © 2020 WTJU Read complete review
