Laurence Vittes
Gramophone, July 2016

Throughout it all, partnered with a rich palette of colour by Colette Valentine, Mathaes plays as if she were the heroine in a fantasy… © 2016 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

David DeBoor Canfield
Fanfare, May 2015

The violin playing of Jessica Mathaes is secure in all of its parameters. She has a keen ear and sense of line, such that what might be a challenge in bringing together the episodic elements of these works seems instinctive for her. Her intonation is impeccable, and her tonal production most ingratiating. Pianist Colette Valentine is a solid artist in her own right, and complements the violin parts most pleasingly in these performances. © 2015 Fanfare

Fanfare, May 2015

Composers’ Reminiscences is an amusing work that allows listeners to test their skills in recognizing the styles of various composers. Mathaes and Valentine play it with a great deal of verve and in their expert hands it is exciting music. The sound on this Naxos recording is excellent and gives the listener the impression of being seated in a chamber music venue with good acoustics. This is a well-programmed disc full of fascinating music that should be of interest to the myriad lovers of contemporary American chamber music. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

Colin Clarke
Fanfare, May 2015

The sonata for violin and piano, subtitled “Celtic Wedding,” was written in 1991 and for this performance Mathaes is joined by the excellent pianist Colette Valentine. The delicious timelessness of the slow movement is particularly affecting, especially—given Mathaes’s silken tone and impeccable intonation—the catchy rhythms of the finale. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

Audiophile Audition, August 2014

An adventurous choice of program…well worth the effort.

This is something of a daring departure for a follow-up album, and it is very successful, bringing to light music that I daresay would remain hidden otherwise…[Mathaes’] tone is beautiful and her technical acumen second to none…The commitment to the music is obvious and the fine sense of phrasing and line are evident in every bar. Partner Colette Valentine displays an ample tone and clarity in her accompaniment, in truth neither secondary nor accessory but equal and essential. © 2014 Audiophile Audition Read complete review
