Lawrence Hansen
American Record Guide, November 2014

The recorded sound is superb… I particularly listened for the final “dying heartbeat” thrums in the basses at the end of the Pathetique—a superb depth and fullness to the sound. © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Fanfare, September 2014

…Jansons’ Shostakovich Sixth is…very, very good; and coupled as it is with a better than very, very good Tchaikovsky Sixth, I think this release deserves a very, very strong recommendation. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Paul Corfield Godfrey
MusicWeb International, June 2014

The coupling of these two Sixth Symphonies by Russian composers is…unique in the catalogue. Those wishing to hear Jansons’ later thoughts on these scores will be well satisfied with both the performances and the superlatively engineered recording. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under Mariss Jansons is in quite excellent form… These highly desirable performances are amongst the greatest committed to disc. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Norman Lebrecht
Sinfini Music, May 2014

Jansons sees connections that other maestros miss. The dialogue between these two symphonies goes beyond the number six and the fact that both open on the note E and end in the B minor key. Each symphony expresses a fateful moment.

What shines through is an intensity of detail in a tapestry of sound, the conversion of wispy pen strokes into a mortal monument. Few conductors are able to capture, at once, both the hint and the whole of a musical masterpiece. This is one of Mariss Jansons’ most illuminating records… © 2014 Sinfini Music Read complete review
