Fanfare, November 2013

Grümmer was especially renowned as an interpreter of Mozart and Wagner…This album features a generous sampling of her artistry in Mozart…Pianist Hans Altmann is a sensitive accompanist, and Grümmer is an impeccable interpreter. This is Lieder singing at its very finest; I cannot think of any other recital of Mozart songs I have heard that equals this one.

If you are a fan of Grümmer in particular, or Mozart, or great singing in general, you will not want to pass this item up; highly recommended. © 2013 Fanfare Read complete review

The interpretations are subtle yet telling, without a shred of artifice. They make an ideal forerunner to the fine performances of arias from Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, and Magic Flute.

You are unlikely to be disappointed with this recital. © 2013 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

The Munchner Rundfunkorchester is conducted by Kurt Eichhorn and by Horst Stein; Hans Altmann is the pianist. The arias exude gorgeous singing, be it the adherence to the musical line…the sure placement in ‘Come scoglio’ and its recitative or the radiant tone in every selection. In the two Cosi arias we have an infrequent opportunity to hear her singing opera in Italian. Kmentt makes a worthy Ferrando in the duet…This CD should serve as a desirable acquisition… © 2013 International Record Review

Here we have a selection of lieder and operatic arias by Mozart, a composer Grümmer excelled in.

The first seven tracks are devoted to lieder, very sensitively accompanied by Hans Altmann. The highlight for me is Abendempfindung KV523. It is exquisitely sung, with warmth and purity of tone. The other lieder fare extremely well and I wholeheartedly concur with the Grove Book of Opera, which emphasizes her ’beautiful voice, clarity of diction and innate musicianship’. Un moto di gioia KV 579 is extremely well-characterized.

The remainder of the CD consists of arias from the four main operas. The two arias from Le nozze di Figaro, in which Grümmer sings the role of the Countess, are distinguished by warmth, tenderness and sensitivity. Beauty of tone and exquisite phrasing are a hallmark throughout. In the duet, Waldemar Kmentt in the role of Ferrando, is splendid. Pamina’s aria from Die Zauberflöte is sensitively sculpted with Grümmer achieving a purity of tone and graceful simplicity. It is a captivating performance.

This is a valuable collection of Mozart lieder and arias, sung by a soprano who…deserves a wider audience…the sound is excellent. Thomas Voigt has provided illuminating liner-notes.© 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review
