William J. Gatens
American Record Guide, September 2014

Peter Dijkstra…gives us a performance that…is vivid and engaging, with a fine sense of dramatic pacing. He is sensitive to the character of the various chorales and treats them all with consistent seriousness…this performance moves extraordinarily well. © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

BACH, J.S.: St. Matthew Passion (Bavarian Radio Chorus, Regensburg Cathedral Choir, Concerto Köln, P. Dijkstra) 900508
BACH, J.S.: St. Matthew Passion (Dijkstra) (NTSC) 900509

…emotionally charged, vibrant interpretation.

…an ideal performance of the Passion as Bach might have envisioned it… © 2014 Opera News Read complete review

Fanfare, September 2014

Peter Dijkstra is obviously a fine musician, and so is able to draw a good sound from his smallish forces…that I found quite pleasing. He also chooses good tempos…and the recorded sound is both warm and crisp.

…this is one of the great triumphs of the historically informed performance philosophy…It tells a story, it has dramatic gestures and a theatrical feeling about it. This is a great recording. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Richard Lawrence
Gramophone, July 2014

The soloists are led by the superb Evangelist of Julian Prégardien… His pacing of the text is exemplary and he is not afraid of a nearoperatic expressiveness: when the cock crows, he rolls the ‘r’ in ‘krähete’, and he is fierce when Pilate delivers Jesus to be crucified. As Jesus, Karl-Magnus Fredriksson is no victim: he is firm, forthright, with a bass-like solidity. Karina Gauvin beautifully sustains the line in ‘Aus Liebe’ and tastefully decorates the reprises of her arias in Part 1.

This moving performance also comes on DVD, with ‘highly atmospheric lighting effects’. © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

MusicWeb International, May 2014

This version of the Passion is beautifully performed and aptly captures the sacred drama of the score. Without a weak link Dijkstra has put together an excellent group of soloists, choral and period instrument forces. The engineers have excelled with the choral and orchestral forces being excellently balanced. This is an extremely desirable recording that I will play often. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review
