J.F. Weber
Fanfare, May 2019

Considering the number of CDs of these motets that have been issued recently, this one needs to be exceptional to compete. The five motets on this disc are indisputably authentic.

…Arman uses only a continuo of organ and violone, exactly the accompaniment chosen by Creed. This is closer to the practice (formerly more common than it is now) of unaccompanied choral singing. …I can approve of Arman while still noting that it is similar to the more generous alternative. © 2019 Fanfare Read complete review

The choir is fairly large. The back cover of the booklet shows an ensemble of 40 or 50 voices. There appear to be some singers outside the frame of the photograph. If they are all singing on this recording, their choral discipline and precision are nothing short of astounding. The tone is clear and refined, and the singers can take Bach’s most daunting vocal writing in stride. This permits Arman to sculpt beautifully paced and balanced performances without having to allow for technical difficulties in the singing. To cite one remarkable example, the opening movement of Der Geist Hilft Unser Schwachheit auf (S 226) unfolds with a lilting grace that I have not heard in any other performance. © 2019 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

There’s a lot we could focus on in these supreme examples of the art of the motet, BWV 225-229. All are performed a capella with occasional light accompaniment by violin and organ. The architecture of these five works is impressive: no cookie-cutters, these! With amazing versatility… © 2018 Audio Video Club of Atlanta Read complete review

The unity and impressive clarity of the chorus throughout this set are gratifying and I appreciate the way that precision does not come at the expense of expression and character. In addition to these qualities are unerring vitality and reverential expression. The Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks is accompanied by a modest basso continuo of violone and organ, providing fresh, clear and colourful support.

These performances are both uplifting and reverential. © 2018 MusicWeb International Read complete review
