The outstanding performance of Ruslan and Lyudmila documented on this DVD shows a remarkable unity of artistic purpose. Cast, chorus, orchestra and production team revitalize the work while putting on a great show…
Albina Shagimuratova’s luminous characterization of Lyudmila is enchanting; her bridal joy is giddy, and her post-kidnapping terror is vivid. Alex Penda brings her wonted all-out intensity to the desperate Gorislava. Elena Zaremba’s Naina mesmerizes the audience as much with her eyes as with her voluptuous mezzo.
Of the men, the handsome countertenor Yuriy Mynenko (Ratmir) dominates, exuding charisma and singing with tone as full as that of most contraltos. Exhibiting a bass-baritone well suited to Ruslan, Mikhail Petrenko early on makes the character’s devotion to Lyudmila endearingly clear, and his monologue is touching. © 2017 Opera News Read complete review
