Joel Kasow
Fanfare, November 2017

What a treat that the New York City Ballet is once again being recorded. The current DVD features two absolute masterpieces (La valse and Symphony in C), one divertissement as only Balanchine could fabricate (Walpurgisnacht Ballet), and a throwaway pas de deux that achieves nobility in its simplicity (Sonatine). The all-French program is an homage to the Gallic aspect of the choreographer’s work (filmed in Paris), while watching the latest crop of Balanchine dancers is a mixture of pleasure and thrill. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

Music for Several Instruments, August 2017

This Blu-ray is a perfect example of High Definition: sound and picture in this opulent theatre presented with the highest fidelity, exquisite costumes, gorgeous dancers, and, most importantly, the great Balanchine tradition that goes back to the NYC Ballet premieres of these works in 1948 (Symphony in C), 1951 (La Valse), 1975 (Sonatine) and 1980 (Walpurgisnacht). The dancing here is thrilling on so many levels, and enhanced by the sensitive film direction of Vincent Bataillon, and the production by Francois Duplat. I had the strong feeling more than once while watching these dances of losing myself in an art of beautiful lines, masses of colours and complex parabolas, all moving to the music. © 2017 Music for Several Instruments Read complete review
