…The top honors go to Patricia Petibon as Giunia and Silvia Tro Santafé as Cecilio. From a straight-toned whisper to a full-throated forte, Petibon suits her voice to the moment with the abandon of a great singing actress. The French soprano is also a mesmerizing stage presence… Santafé has a genuinely beautiful instrument, with an exceptionally free upper register for a mezzosoprano, and she tosses off the coloratura passages with remarkable accuracy and freedom. The supporting roles are also handled with great authority. © 2019 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Opera News, December 2018

What director today could resist that blank canvas, a void crying out to be filled? Claus Guth’s staging of Mozart’s youthful Lucio Silla, introduced at the Theater an der Wien earlier this century, is ablaze with action in this 2017 revival at Madrid’s Teatro Real. The musical energy is high as well, thanks to a terrific cast and the intelligent brio of conductor Ivor Bolton.

Silvia Tro Santafé shows great musical and dramatic empathy as Cecilio, and Kalna’s assertive, bravura Cinna is compelling. In the title role, Streit sings almost generically amid the vivid gymnastics, but in calmer moments he manages to evoke a bully’s rage and cowardice. Soprano María José Moreno and tenor Kenneth Tarver are brilliant in the brief roles of Celia and Aufidio. © 2018 Opera News Read complete review

The vocal laurels, and the principal reason for recommending this recording, belong to Patricia Petibon who tears into Giunia’s arias as if her life really did depend on it. © 2018 BBC Music Magazine

…Some of the most dramatic singing and interpretation come from the singing of Kurt Streit as Lucio Silla. He is past his best years as a mellifluous Mozartian, but does infuse emotion and drama in what he sings. In this latter respect he is matched by the raven-haired Patricia Petibon for whom he has a passionate love. She acts with conviction though not always matched by her opera seria coloratura singing. Her vocal evenness, and divisions, leaves something to be desired at times, but nonetheless she succeeds in creating a meaningful character. © 2018 MusicWeb International Read complete review

…Claus Guth—never one for excess—offers something more serious and austere, and ultimately more thought-provoking.

Ivor Bolton’s conducting is very respectable… © 2018 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
