DELIBES, L.: Coppélia [Ballet] (Bolshoi Ballet, 2018) (Blu-ray, Full-HD) BAC463

…There’s plenty to enjoy here. Margarita Shrayner—a first soloist who’s risen quickly through the company ranks—proves a natural soubrette as Swanilda.

Artem Ovcharenko’s Frantz matches Shrayner’s youthful energy and pulls off bravura steps with bouncy aplomb… Dr Coppelius, meanwhile, is played fairly straight by Alexey Loparevich as a fractious crank and serious wannabe magus.

Delibes’s score is such a delight, recorded here with lovely clarity under the baton of Pavel Sorokin. © 2020 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

The Bolshoi Ballet’s production of Coppélia is arguably the finest to be seen anywhere in the world. While we still wait to see if a recording of Natalia Osipova’s outstanding performance will ever be officially released, this one will do very well to be going along with. Only a curmudgeon of Dr Coppélius-like proportions would fail to enjoy this splendidly invigorating show. © 2019 MusicWeb International

Apart from its cast of appealingly engaging and recognisable characters—heroic, villainous or, like most us, located somewhere in the middle—Coppélia’s great strength lies in Delibes’s masterly score. While the foot-tapping occupants of the front stalls won’t need any convincing of that fact, one expert commentator gets it absolutely spot on

This new and expertly-directed release has, I think, a strong claim to be the current Coppélia of choice, particularly because it is, at least in the Blu-ray presentation that I have been watching, delivered in absolutely pin-sharp picture quality and with impressive sound. © 2019 MusicWeb International Read complete review
