Guy Weatherall
Classical Music, September 2019

Caught live at Mondsee in 1997, Schreier is at his autumnal best with peerless legato and a focused commitment that is matched in spades by Schiff. What will be less appealing to non-German speakers is the interpolation of linking poems Brahms didn’t set: a CD player can of course be programmed, but some speech is recorded irrevocably over music. © 2019 Classical Music

The piano accompaniment is also a bit different. Schiff, as we all know, is primarily a very lyrical pianist who tries to make the piano “sing” in the manner of Alfred Cortot… He caresses each lyric phrase lovingly without slipping into pathos or bathos. Due to his approach, plus the very nice, soft-grained approach to the narration, the whole work greets the ear lovingly, and Schreier enlivens most of his phrases with his customary rhythmic incisiveness.

…I really enjoyed it because of its overall warmth of the narration and Schreier’s wonderfully detailed singing. This one is a gem. © 2018 The Art Music Lounge Read complete review
