Richard Osborne
Gramophone, April 2015

…Barto’s approach makes for an atmospheric, albeit melodramatic reading of the first of the Op 10 Ballades, the narrative of the young Scot who has slain his father at his mother’s behest. By contrast, the third Ballade, the scherzo of the set, receives a refreshingly straightforward reading.

There is insight and refinement in some stretches of the D minor Concerto and during the Più adagio which prefaces the cello’s reprise towards the end of the slow movement of the B flat Concerto.

Remy Franck
Pizzicato, December 2014

These two very special performances of Brahms’s Piano Concertos will divide the audience. Tempi are very slow, the rhythmic is extravagant, especially in the second Concerto… …The First Concerto is a truly enriching experience. © 2014 Pizzicato Read complete review

…Barto’s playing [Piano Concerto No. 2] feels fluid and expressive, overflowing with vibrant colour. Bold and confident in the forceful and stormy Scherzo movement, Barto’s technical command seems effortless. … Barto brings an aching tenderness to the table and slows right down to transmit the most intense yearning. Under Eschenbach’s baton the orchestra in the Finale revels in joyful writing. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review
