Phillip Scott
Fanfare, March 2015

Steffens and his orchestra are meticulous in matters of balance and color, and fearless when it comes to negotiating the emotional peaks of such challenging music. They are beautifully recorded too… © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

ZIMMERMANN, B.A.: Alagoana / Sinfonie in einem Satz / Photoptosis / Stille und Umkehr (Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic, Steffens) C5213
DALLAPICCOLA, L.: Orchestral Music (Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic, Steffens) C5214

For recordings of such rarely heard works, one would hope for subtle, fully thought-through interpretations, top-quality performances with razor-sharp technique, and drop-dead recorded sound. These discs come close to those expectations. The performances are good…highly recommended. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

Grego Applegate Edwards
Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review, November 2014

It is music of complexity and drama, something of real worth. The open modernist listener will likely revel in this music as I did. Zimmermann captures some of the turmoil of the century with an excellent sense of the orchestral forces available to him.

Very recommended. © 2014 Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review Read complete review

Philip Clark
Gramophone, November 2014

Photoptosis, subtitled ‘Prelude for Grand Orchestra’, is usually considered Zimmermann’s defining work but never has it sounded so rawboned and unrelenting: kudos to the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and Karl-Heinz Steffens for pulling off such a chancy, intrepid performance. © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
