David Olds
The WholeNote, March 2019

This collection is an important addition to the discography, and to the awareness of an innovative and once-influential composer whose legacy virtually disappeared after falling out of favour with the Soviet regime.

Congratulations to Moritz Ernst for embracing lesser-known repertoire. His discography also includes music of Walter Braunfels, Viktor Ullmann, Norbert von Hannenheim and Sir Malcolm Arnold. Also Joseph Haydn!

Thanks also to Ernst for gracing a very appreciative audience at Gallery 345 with his insights and extraordinary skill. © 2019 The WholeNote Read complete review

Moritz Ernst’s playing may not be as emotionally extreme as some, but Lourié’s sharpness of wit and sheer breadth of character is well observed, and indeed it can sometimes help to soften the edges just a little here and there. The recording is quite close and in a relatively confined acoustic, but there is much warmth and depth in the mid and lower registers, making for an attractive sound—Ernst’s skilful touch more than equal to close scrutiny. © 2017 MusicWeb international Read complete review

Gramophone, January 2017

…this overview of Lourié’s music for solo piano tends to bear out an idea now gaining credence, namely that Lourié, at least in some instances, anticipated rather than echoed Stravinsky. Ernst’s sensitively artistic performances point up Lourié’s remarkable diversity of expression, and make a compelling case for his music. © 2017 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Grego Applegate Edwards
Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review, December 2016

…I find Arthur Lourie’s solo piano music in the hands of Moritz Ernst a thing of beauty. The comprehensive 3-CD set takes us from 1908 and his Debussy-Scriabin period through to a more modernist parallel-Messiaenic phase and finally to a crisp neo-classicism and a further beyond by 1938.

…Lourie’s love for, and immersion in the sensuous properties of the solo pianoforte mark him as a composer of merit and a deeply pianistic poeticism. His stylistically varying output may have made him difficult to pigeonhole during his lifetime, but we can listen today with no expectations and experience the music as a set of wonderful surprises. © 2016 Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review Read complete review
