Philip Greenfield
American Record Guide, September 2020

Vojtech Dyk is a native of Prague active in theater and the pop scene, and he brings that background with him to Mass. You’ll hear him noodling and doodling around written notes in the pop tradition. …He is very convincing in the role. The guy has serious pipes, the music is amenable to his approach, and the maestro backs him to the hilt.

…Maestro Davies presides over an international cast, so the accented English of the Celebrant and a few others might take some getting used to. The orchestra sounds terrific in the Meditations and elsewhere.  © 2020 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

The ’star’ performers here are the perfect musical pacing and sure control of Dennis Russell-Davies and the excellent playing of the various instrumental ensembles built around the ORF Vienna Radio SO. As mentioned, the technical presentation of this performance is first-rate even allowing for more audience noise than many recent ‘live’ recordings.

This new version certainly deserves consideration for the quality of the instrumental contribution and Russell-Davies’ unerring control. …Certainly a valuable addition to the Bernstein discography. © 2020 MusicWeb International Read complete review

James Manheim
AllMusic.com, April 2020

The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony conveys a real sense of discovery of the music, not the dutifully note-perfect rendition of jazz and blues rhythms one sometimes finds in this part of the world, but the real credit here goes to the sole American in the room, albeit one who has spent much of his career in the German-speaking world, conductor Dennis Russell Davies.

The result is a Mass…that holds together uniquely well, and a version that can compete with the one the composer led back in the 1970s. © 2020 AllMusic.com Read complete review

Remy Franck
Pizzicato, March 2020

The Vienna ORF Orchestra plays with commitment and rhythmic confidence, the choirs and solo voices are of an impressive level.

As celebrant the Czech actor and baritone Vojtech Dyk does not try to perform like a classically trained singer, which as a band singer he is not, but he is appealing both in singing and reciting with a committed and (in contrast to other performers in this role) unaffected performance.

With its clear, precise sound, this recording reflects all the expressionistic excitement of the composition, and is definitely one of Mass’s reference recordings. © 2020 Pizzicato Read complete review
