Richard Bratby
Gramophone, July 2020

Ariane Matiakh conducts a broad, no-nonsense account; she’s particularly impressive in the score’s more sepulchral passages (Capriccio’s recorded sound is weighted towards the bass and tends to blur edges). She builds the dramatic climaxes with considerable power. … This is an important and enjoyable addition to the discography of a still-underrated composer. © 2020 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

The performance by Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ariane Matiakh is always sympathetic and splendidly played.

What Capriccio Records have done is to provide the first complete recording of one of Dohnányi’s most vibrant and interesting works. For this reason alone, it is an essential project. © 2020 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Records International, February 2020

After its premiere in 1910 this dance pantomime of around 80 minutes in length spread like a wildfire over the stages of Europe. The ‘Wedding Waltz’ from Der Schleier der Pierrette could regularly be heard on musical request programs on the radio, enjoying similar popularity to the waltz sequence from Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. Dohnanyi’s choice of the genre of pantomime was entirely in keeping with the spirit of the age that, following the large-scale, plot-laden ballets of late Romanticism, sought to find in pantomime a more intimate and more naturalistic form of expression. © 2020 Records International
