American Record Guide, November 2011

Here’s a very nice set of three CDs devoted mostly to German music and performed by the cream of German and Austrian boychoirs (or mixed choirs of men or youths plus boys). Name your favorite Teutonic choir that contains boys, and you’ll no doubt find it here…

Performances, as you would expect with such esteemed choirs at work, are mostly excellent; recording ambiences and quality are quite variable, but generally fine.

For multiple helpings of vocal selections—again, many that don’t leap to mind at this time of year—with large vocal ensembles, try the Capriccio release “Angel Voices.” Here a half-dozen boys’ choirs, headlined by the Vienna Boys Choir, survey a few obvious choices with off-the-beaten-stuff from some big names: Brahms, Saint-Saens, Haydn, etc. One caveat: no texts or translations are included in the booklet.

Stephen Eddins, December 2010

The title of the album, Angel Voices: The Boys’ Choir Christmas Celebration, would lead listeners to expect that they will be hearing a recital of music for boy’s voices. It does feature several renowned boys’ choirs, the Vienna Boys’ Choir, Altenburger Sängerknaben, and Tölzer Knabenchor, but the majority of the three-disc collection is devoted to music written for mixed voices, sung by choirs in which boys take the soprano and alto parts. On most of the tracks, the boys’ choirs are joined by a men’s choir to fill in the lower parts for SATB works. The ensembles that are regularly made up of men and boys include Thomanerchor Leipzig (the choir of J.S. Bach’s church), Dresdner Kreuzchor, and Regensburger Domspatzen. Of the set’s 45 tracks, 12 are devoted to boys’ voices alone. Regensburger Domspatzen, Dresdner Kreuzchor and Thomanerchor Leipzig deliver the most consistently effective performances. The repertoire is weighted toward German and Austrian works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras.
