Arthur Lintgen
Fanfare, November 2007

[Zemlinsky’s] luminous performance of Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony is a revelation. Zemlinsky’s attempt to merge symphony and song is, in a way, similar to and perhaps, to a certain extent…Eschenbach makes the Orchestre de Paris sound like a world-class ensemble, and he is aided immeasurably by the impeccable vocalism of Matthias Goerne and Christine Schäfer.

Fanfare, November 2007

contender for a “best” recording is one of the finest recordings ever received of Alexander Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony, easily the most frequently recorded of any of his compositions, and still a much more important work than it is commonly given credit. Christoph Eschenbach convinces us why this should be so, better than any previous account. What makes this rendition special is that it achieves a chamber-music-like clarity without sacrificing the late-Romantic bigness of the score.
