Huntley Dent
Fanfare, March 2019

…We are set to hear an outstanding Carmen, one of the best on disc, but something else raises it to Hall of Fame status—the astonishing conducting by Karajan. He was capable, especially before he became such an eminence, of giving a score the utmost in musical values, and here he utterly transforms Bizet’s well-worn music. I would fall over myself praising the variety of color, pacing, and phrasing that Karajan delivers. Not a single number, indeed not a single passage, is less than memorable.

…The chorus, including the children’s chorus, is as musical and inviting as the lead singers, and so are the secondary characters. © 2019 Fanfare Read complete review

…The cast is a strong one. Bumbry has all the technique and presence. Vickers was approaching the height of his expressive powers. Freni was always adaptable and convincing in such rôles. Diaz knew what he was about. © 2018 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Remy Franck
Pizzicato, November 2018

This is a great document from Salzburg, Bizet’s Carmen in a very spontaneous and lively performance with a marvellous cast. Grace Bumbry is all what you can imagine for the title role of this opera, and Jon Vickers is a superb Don José. © 2018 Pizzicato
