Rob Cowan
Gramophone, March 2018

If there’s an ideal singer—song musical match it’s Grace Bumbry and Brahms Lieder. Orfeo’s release of a recital from the 1965 Salzburg Festival with Beaumont Glass (1925—2011) at the piano is a thing of great beauty, from the chilling alarm of ‘Auf dem Kirchhofe’, where the voice rings resplendent, to the rapt opening of ‘Der Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht’, in which the young nightingale sings above the drowning darkness—a narrative that is conveyed by the duo with a rare sense of intimacy. © 2018 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
