Ralph Locke
American Record Guide, March 2020

The music leaps at you, and the performers have a field day with characterization. The best-known of the singers was, and still is, Hilde Rössel-Majdan, a perceptive and highly reliable singer of the early-LP era. (She was the spirited Marcellina on Erich Kleiber’s much-admired Marriage of Figaro.) She makes the busybody Mme Bertrand seem a worthy predecessor of Dame Marthe in Gounod’s Faust. Tenor Walter Anton Dotzer sings Roger’s song in praise of physical labor with the sweetness of a 1930s-era operetta heartthrob like Richard Tauber. The other singers are competent, spirited, and wobblefree. © 2020 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Records International, November 2019

The first of Auber’s mature opéra-comiques, this 1825 “rescue opera” was an international success and translated into six languages. It was particularly popular in German-speaking lands and is heard here in that language in a historical Austrian Radio recording. © 2019 Records International
