Stephen J. Nereffid
Music is Good, December 2014

Top 15 New Classical of 2014: Stephen J. Nereffid

Hmm, maybe this isn’t classical as such, but who’s counting? Anne Hytta plays the hardanger fiddle of her native Norway in a collection of her own compositions, inspired by “imagining landscapes without people”. You might call most of these pieces melancholic or dark-hued, but the playing is full of warmth. © 2014 Music in Good

Tim Woodall
The Strad, July 2014

…Hytta’s pieces are melancholic but always carry the hint of a dance. Her playing, which has an open, improvisatory feel, is muscular, even savage at times, and expertly blends ornate melodic lines with harmonic accompaniment. Draumsyn is structured around moods created by different fiddle tunings, which traditionally have individual colour names. Hytta introduces her own synaesthetic element, linking her own colour associations to the sonorities created by playing different instruments…The result is a bewitching album of music that sounds both ancient and new. © 2014 The Strad Read complete review
