Rob Cowan
Gramophone, September 2013

What I particularly like about this performance is its musical honesty, where Strauss’s genius as a master orchestrator, his ability to conjure mood, whether heroic or reflective, is presented with the kind of understated interpretative effectiveness that, on the evidence of his recordings, Strauss himself favoured.

Roth draws extremely fine playing from his orchestra and I look forward to further instalments in the same series… © 2013 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Blair Sanderson, July 2013

Roth…here leads the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg in straightforward interpretations, employing a large orchestra on modern instruments, and giving the music a full late-Romantic expression. Roth draws the orchestra out in his expansive reading, and finds a passion in the work that seems more genuine and heartfelt than Ein Heldenleben’s cartoonish posturing. Listeners who are breaking into Strauss for the first time would do well to follow this promising series. © 2013 Read complete review
