Luke Pfeil
American Record Guide, November 2016

Known as a brilliant guitar soloist, Coste composed a number of works for the oboe…including this concerto and sonata and a number of characteristic pieces. …The concerto, originally composed for oboe and orchestra, has been rather clumsily arranged for piano, and the program notes state that this is the first recording of this arrangement. Pianist Sonia Ballarin nimbly makes the best of it, and in music actually written for the piano she does a very fine job. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Ronald E. Grames
Fanfare, November 2016

…there is plenty of variety to keep the recital interesting, even for those whose primary curiosity isn’t focused on the oboe. The fairly close recording captures some key and breathing noise, but Calcagni’s characterful, reedy tone, remarkably even across all registers, holds up beautifully to the close scrutiny. Even more importantly, he plays these pieces with huge conviction, marvelous insight, sensitivity of phrasing and dynamics, and remarkable dexterity. It is a joy to hear him play. The piano has that enclosed sound of a microphone in the casework, but it is not so pronounced that it sounds like it is in a different acoustic altogether. There is nothing constrained, however, about pianist Sonia Ballarin’s playing, which is alert, resourceful, and delightfully responsive. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review
