Vadym Kholodenko…sets out with a solo debut that skilfully combines the familiar with the unknown. You can judge his pianism against the greats in Rachmaninov’s famous transcriptions and you can be equally impressed by his advocacy of Nikolai Medtner’s seventh sonata.

He’s a lot like Matsuev or the young Volodos, with technique to burn and enough panache for a half-dozen lesser performers. He manages to perform the Medtner sonata not just with basic survival skills but with eagerness and flair. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Jeremy Nicholas
Gramophone, June 2014

Kholodenko…gets inside [Medtner’s] turbulent score with technique and stamina to spare, evoking everything from ‘galloping gusts and shrieking blasts to soft breezes, with swirling eddies’…played with a well-recorded, full-blooded tone.

The selection of Rachmaninov transcriptions comes off splendidly. Kholodenko conveys his obvious enjoyment of their sophisticated craftsmanship…There’s a welcome measure, too, of charm and good humour in the two Kreisler paraphrases… © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

His stylish, deeply felt performances are especially welcome in the Medtner part of the program… © 2014 Audio Video Club of Atlanta Read complete review
