Joshua Rosenblum
Opera News, April 2016

This work focuses on the unhappy, middle-aged Nora, a character who doesn’t speak or sing, but who is represented by the “Nora Choir,” which functions as the voice inside her head (the one we all have), chanting helpful, supportive phrases…

At one point she must solve a twelve-tone puzzle, taking twelve choristers, each representing a single word and a single tone, and arranging them in an order that makes sense, both musically and semantically. …the versatile and game members of the John Alexander Singers sound like they’re having great fun as they sing, croon, chant, laugh, snap, clap and swoop; most listeners will, too. © 2016 Opera News Read complete review

…Ms Graham, the choir, and the instrumentalists—perform capably. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Gramophone, February 2016

The performance is upbeat, chipper and far more broadway than bel canto. © 2016 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Bay Area Reporter, November 2015

[Susan Graham’s] voice retains its warmth, beauty, and ability to communicate reverence. The disc’s segue from Graham’s snippet of “He Will Gather Us Around” from Dead Man Walking (2000), written for her voice, to the premiere recording of the six-minute choral version (2003) is perfect. © 2015 Bay Area Reporter Read complete review
