Terry Robbins
The WholeNote, May 2017

There is beautiful playing and a lovely balance throughout the CD, with Montero not surprisingly providing a perfectly judged accompaniment for Smith’s warm and sensitive interpretations. © 2017 The WholeNote Read complete review

Fanfare, May 2017

A whole CD devoted to Spanish music for cello and piano might not seem an obvious proposition at first, but Smith and Oyágüez have mined the repertoire for rare, real jewels. Although this disc features music predominantly composed in the 20th century, the impulses embodied in the works date back centuries. The composers on this CD truly have captured the spirit of Spanish civilization, with all its color and bravado. …The performers present a rich narrative of the Spanish soul, in which the cello becomes as native an instrument as the guitar. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

Fanfare, May 2017

Smith’s cello sings with beautiful tone and open-hearted, sincere feeling. One cannot listen to his playing and not be deeply moved by it. Nor can one not be emotionally affected by the moods, alternately cheerful and sad, of this wonderful music. Montero proves to be the ideal partner, his piano accommodating but never passive in its role. A beautiful recital and one keenly recommended. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

Colin Clarke
Fanfare, May 2017

Andrew Smith and Alfredo Oyágüez Montero started playing together as a duo as far back as 1999. …Recorded back in 2013 in Santa Barbara, California, this is a highly enjoyable, well-recorded disc of well-known Spanish and Catalan music.

The recording is top-drawer, with the balance between the two instruments believable and natural. A lovely disc. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

American Record Guide, May 2017

What is an American cellist doing in this kind of music? [Andrew Smith] has been influenced by certain festivals he has performed in, but his primary move in the Spanish direction is probably his friend and colleague, Alfredo Montero, a native of Spain who has worked with him since they met in 1999. They play together with verve and sensitivity.

All of this music is effectively arranged, and I can recommend this program to you without reserve. © 2017 American Record Guide

Audio Video Club of Atlanta, March 2017

American cellist Andrew Smith, a native of California, joins forces with Spanish pianist Alfredo Oy g ez Montero, who has distinguished himself as head of the conducting and orchestral programs at the Conservatorio Superior de las Islas Baleares, in a program of Spanish music that both young men find very congenial to their feeling for singing melodies, markedly dark and moody tone colors, and alert rhythms. © 2017 Audio Video Club of Atlanta Read complete review
