Jacqueline Kharouf
Fanfare, November 2016

With this album [Nelson] has selected his favorite colors from a palate of work that pulls from an eclectic range of influences, including contemporary literature, German cabaret, and opera (among others). I wouldn’t say that there is an overarching intention or meaning to the album, but with Watercolors Nelson demonstrates his love for collaboration and incorporating new and different art forms in his music. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review

Gramophone, July 2016

The most eagerly anticipated will be the 25-minute Zoo Stories, in which Bruzauskas, hornist Brian Thomas and pianist Timothy Hester sing, narrate and otherwise engagingly carry on; but the original stories by Kate Pogue, each with a surprisingly serious moral and populated by complex characters, go on at such length that many children might consider this a tale for adults. © 2016 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Colin Clarke
Fanfare, July 2016

Mezzo Sonja Bruzauskas is expressive and has a beautiful voice.

Tali Morgulis’s piano playing is splendid…, capable of the most astonishing tenderness.

Brian Thomas is a superb horn player, particularly impressive in his high-register, his lyricism impeccable (with faultless slurs). © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review

Ronald E. Grames
Fanfare, July 2016

German-trained mezzo-soprano Sonja Bruzauskas is the featured artist in all of this, and it is hard to imagine a more imaginative and sympathetic advocate for these works. Her voice, supple and adaptable, is equal to every challenge. Her acting skills are no less impressive. And she, and her composer, are unusually blessed in the company of artists, primarily from the Houston Symphony, who join them. Special notice should be taken of pianist Tali Morgulis, who takes on the lion’s share of keyboard duties with consistent flair. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review
