Colin Clarke
Fanfare, November 2018

Dimitri Dover is a pianist with the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He has a sure touch that opens the disc beautifully, with what the booklet refers to as a “finger-snapping Rat Pack motif”… The depths of emotions Slattery can evoke really first surface in “When I was young”; the way he shapes the lines, the way Garfein’s melodies illuminate the text by taking them for a walk on the highways of his melodies, is at once masterly and incredibly touching. Slattery’s diction is faultless, never forced but always clear. © 2018 Fanfare Read complete review

Joshua Kosman
San Francisco Chronicle, July 2018

Garfein’s settings match the graceful elegance of Hall’s writing, with just the right touch of deference. You can hear the younger artist ceding center stage to his senior colleague, while shaping each poem into something new and vibrant. In an ingenious touch, each of the 11 songs in the cycle is presented twice: Once in a beautiful rendition by tenor Michael Slattery and pianist Dimitri Dover, and again with Hall himself reading with piano accompaniment. This final project stands as a lovely, elegiac seal on Hall’s career. © 2018 San Francisco Chronicle  Read complete review
