Elissa Poole
The Globe and Mail, August 2010

Tenor John Elwes...leaves few opportunities for characterization untouched and each song is vivid and immediate. His voice...suits the robust accompaniment provided by the multi-talented Kenneth Slowik (better known as a cellist and conductor), who plays a 19th century Graf fortepiano here that never sounds like it’s just along for the ride.

Fanfare, September 2008

…the performances of John Elwes and Kenneth Slowik have fine qualities. There is keen use of diction and coloring both in the voice and drawn from the early 1830s Conrad Graf instrument, which forms part of the Smithsonian collection.

Elwes’s experience includes collaborations with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Indeed there is much in his performances that recalls that of those great musicians, be it the light and slightly nasal tone or his penchant for word-pointing. …Kenneth Slowik makes an insightful accompanist, using the soft pedals to particularly good effect. © 2008 Fanfare Read complete review
