Philip Greenfield
American Record Guide, November 2014

These folks set a mighty nice musical atmosphere, and that’s one of the things Christmas gatherings are all about. © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Traditional and Early music groups have embraced the dual realities of court and church music as well as folk music, and Ensemble Galilei has established themselves in excellence. For Christmas listening that is inventive and musically informed, and also completely traditional at the same time, this is a CD that can liven up the holiday listening while keeping it in line with lived-in comfort. © 2013 The WSCL Blog

The Best Christmas Recordings of 2013

From the opening unison strings of ‘Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence’ to the last note of ‘Silent Night,’ this CD courses with the extraordinary arrangements of Ensemble Galilei, created by musicians whose musical sensibilities have been shaped by their personal histories. The group brings a lively Celtic flair to favorite songs of the season. © 2013 WFMT (Chicago)

International Record Review, December 2013

The musicianship displayed here on these very early instrumental pieces is of a high order… I found this to be an enthralling CD, ideal late-night Christmas listening, superbly performed and recorded, A Blu-ray version is also available: the result is an utter delight from start to finish. © 2013 International Record Review

Audiophile Audition, November 2013

Any recording with a banjo, viola da gamba, and harp has got to be well-considered and carefully planned, right? But I don’t sense the wonderful congruousness of this combination, among others, as being something that is planned from an orchestration viewpoint. Rather, it’s the performances themselves, so beautifully crafted and miraculously presented, coupled with a spirituality and uplifting sensibility that allows these disparate lions and lambs to lie down with one another and create such uplifting timbres. If love of music can come across in performances—and I surely think it can—this album would be a demonstration disc of that quality.

Along with tried and true favorites there are also some original compositions as well, and they fit just like a glove. This is quite simply a stunning album, and I can’t imagine a better seasonal offering coming along this year. With spectacular Blu-ray audio surround sound…and an accompanying CD…this is a spectacular album. © 2013 Audiophile Audition Read complete review

Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review, November 2013

The musical selection is great.

The song choice is refreshing and the ensemble does them a real favor with early/folk arrangements that use a harp, a pennywhistle or a recorder, violin-fiddle, even a banjo for one or two.

The arrangements and performances are enchanting. There are jigs, there is plainsong done instrumentally, there are no vocals and so you can revel in the sound of the arrangements and the wonderful carols without having to worry about just what it all exactly means. I find the disk a true delight. © 2013 Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review Read complete review
