For most current opera lovers, the best parts are the unusual excerpts and the long interviews. I especially enjoyed footage of a rehearsal of the Cavalleria duet with Giulietta Simionato and Franco Corelli, Maria Callas singing ‘Vissi d’Arte’, a young (much thinner) Luciano Pavarotti singing ‘Di quella pira’, and a small section of the Butterfly love duet with Carlo Bergonzi and an unidentified Renata Scotto. …By far the best parts of this film are [the] conversations, especially with Mario del Monaco, Renata Tebaldi, Giulietta Simionato, Claudio Abbado, Placido Domingo, and Mirella Freni. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Opera News, February 2016

Watching part of a music rehearsal of Simon Boccanegra with Freni, Piero Cappuccilli and Nicolai Ghiaurov, with Abbado conducting, you see artists for whom this repertoire is second nature, joking around a bit while pouring out stunning phrases. Freni is interviewed, always unpretentious and direct, and shown in some footage as Alice Ford in a Falstaff production that directly preceded the Boccanegra—a reminder of her effortless vocalism and abundant charm on stage in this role. We watch Giorgio Strehler, communicating in German, put soloists and chorus through their paces in Lohengrin rehearsal, hands on, passionate. © 2016 Opera News Read complete review
