DONIZETTI, G.: Elisabetta al castello di Kenilworth [Opera] (Pratt, Remigio, Anduaga, Pop, Donizetti Opera Choir and Orchestra, Frizza) CDS7834.02

The Bergamo performance’s great strength is the conducting of Riccardo Frizza. With his vast experience in bel canto, he knows exactly how to maintain the dramatic momentum throughout, his tempos are ideally judged, he supports the cavatinas with consistent sensitivity, and he enlivens the many cabalettas with all the necessary buoyant energy. © 2020 Opera

This staging and performance are the antithesis of Regietheater. Costumes in period, and with minimal stage props, the director and singers realise the intimate and dramatic story before one’s eyes. It is an exemplary demonstration of singers working to bring out the drams and emotion of a story by acting and vocal expression alone. Again, I gave the issue my personal Recommended. © 2019 MusicWeb International

The cast is strong. Jessica Pratt’s authoritative Elisabetta gradually warms into an expansive legato and a lustrous, vibrant top; she phrases flexibly and stylishly.

Xabier Anduaga has a clear, Italianate lyric tenor with a prominent head voice and a reasonable upper extension. His Leicester has a strong vocal and physical presence, singing the cantilenas with spacious expression, shading into the top skillfully at medium dynamics.

Riccardo Frizza’s conducting is stylish, both in the broad cantilenas and in the buoyant, smartly pointed rhythms… The orchestra is responsive… © 2019 Opera News Read complete review

DONIZETTI, G.: Elisabetta al castello di Kenilworth [Opera] (Pratt, Remigio, Anduaga, Pop, Donizetti Opera Choir and Orchestra, Frizza) CDS7834.02

The cast members are a mix of Italians and foreigners, but all pronounce the language well and phrase and ornament their lines stylishly. Carmela Remigio, an exquisite lyric soprano, handles the demands of the role of Amelia well, getting better as the work unfurls. Jessica Pratt, a dramatic-coloratura soprano, produces marvels in the intense role of the queen.

Riccardo Frizza conducts appropriately, knowing when to push on and when to yield so a singer can shine. The orchestra sounds fully capable, reminding me how standards have risen everywhere. I enjoyed some brief solos by the clear-toned, sensitive clarinetist and English-horn player. © 2019 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

The Donizetti Festival gathered a respectable cast under the lively Italian conductor Riccardo Frizza and the results are enjoyable. Jessica Pratt is a spirited soprano in bel canto repertoire and gives Elisabetta plenty of coloratura fire. Carmela Remigio has a warmer soprano and presents a sympathetic Amelia. The confrontation between the two women presages the Elisabetta Maria Stuarda face-off but without the same venom. © 2019 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Jessica Pratt is the Queen, looking regal and singing with stronger mid and low registers than I remember—her acuti, as ever, are plentiful and stunning… Riccardo Frizza’s conducting is considerate and cheerfully indulgent. © 2019 Opera Now

Among his estimable colleagues, we found the Spanish lyric tenor Xabier Anduaga vocally and visually impressive in the role of Leicester, the Queen’s favorite. English soprano Jessica Pratt is lovely to look at and equally lovely to listen to as Elisabetta. Baritone Stephan Pop is a properly sinister and sonorous Warmey. Carmela Remigio is an effective Amelia.

Ricardo Frizza conducts with complete mastery of the Bel Canto style. © 2019 Rafael's Music Notes Read complete review

Lark Reviews, June 2019

The singing here is excellent—in particular the heroic tenor of Xabier Anduaga as Leicester—and the production is bland but never gets in the way of the music. Riccardo Frizza maintains a brisk approach throughout… © 2019 Lark Reviews Read complete review
